| Many students have requested books, CD's or DVD's and music to assist in the study and practice of yoga at home. While it is recommended that beginners also continue their study with a qualified instructor, starting a home practice - even just for 30 minutes a day - is one of the most important steps to challenge yourself and grow as a yogi. For asana practice, we recommend using audio (instead of video) that is accompanied by a booklet showing the poses. This will avoid the problem of doing yoga in a room with the TV and having to strain in poses to see the screen. For beginners, Erich Schiffmann and Ali McGraw team up on two excellent DVD's. If you desire truly Gentle Yoga, Peggy Cappy (featured on Public TV) has two excellent videos or try Stephen Cope's "The Gentle Yoga Kit". If you prefer vigorous Vinyasa Flow (or Power) Yoga classes, you may enjoy recorded practices from Shiva Rae or Bryan Kest. Kundalini Yoga is also a wonderful form of yoga to help expand your practice; we enjoy Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa's "Kundalini Yoga" from Living Arts and it's short enough to do every morning. For deep relaxation, Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra (complete yogic relaxation) are both wonderful and very safe to practice at home. We highly recommend Judith Lasater's book "Relax and Renew" for restorative yoga, and you can order Yoga Nidra CD's from Rod Stryker or Debbie Jensen. Dawna's recommended reading list includes (but in no way is limited to): Light on Yoga, B.K.S. Ingar Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness, Erich Schiffmann The Breathing Book, Donna Farhi Relax and Renew, Judith Lasater The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice, T.K.V. Desikachar Yoga and the Quest for the True Self, Stephen Cope A Path with Heart, Jack Kornfield The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle ---Dawna |
